Fight Back with Better Numbers

Ross Dawson

This is the final blog in a 3-part series discussing the changing economics of farming by comparing farm costs to inflation over time.

And here’s the chart that really brings the story home:

Wheat Price vs UK wheat yields 1860-present

The blue line shows the real value of wheat - falling sharply since the 1980s.

The green line shows UK wheat yields - rising strongly through the 20th century but starting to plateau after the 1990s.

For much of the post-war period, yield growth allowed farmers to maintain or even grow profits despite falling prices. But that game is now up. Without another Green Revolution breakthrough, the next marginal gains in yield will likely be incremental and expensive.

The Final Combined Picture

Our final chart pulls it all together:

Combined wheat price + machinery cost + yields

  • Wheat prices falling

  • Machinery costs soaring

  • Yields plateauing

That’s the squeeze in a nutshell. It’s why farmers need to adopt a fundamentally different mindset: one that is data-driven, business-first, and ruthlessly focused on margins.

How to Fight Back

1. Know Your Numbers

Without knowing your break-even point and true costs of production, you’re flying blind. Every farm needs to understand its true cost per tonne - including machinery, fuel, fertiliser, and overheads.

2. Make Kit Pay Its Way

Every bit of machinery should earn its keep. If a £120k tractor isn’t delivering value per hectare that matches your business goals, it’s time to rethink.

3. Optimise Inputs

Precision agriculture isn’t just a buzzword - it’s becoming essential. Every kg of nitrogen and every litre of diesel needs to deliver return.

4. Sell Smarter

Markets are volatile. The more you understand price trends and timing opportunities, the better your chances of locking in profitable sales.

How YAGRO Can Help

YAGRO’s platform gives you a clear view of your farm’s numbers - costs, margins, trends - so you can make smarter decisions:

Track true cost of production

See machinery costs clearly

Benchmark against others or your own historical performance

You can’t control the markets. But you can control how sharp you run your business - and the farms that do this well are the ones that will thrive through this squeeze.

Part 2: The Hidden Cost of Your Kit

Ross grew up on his family's arable farm near Bury St Edmunds, where he currently lives with his wife and son. Ross has been involved in agriculture his whole career, starting off in seed sales, where he gained his BASIS Seed Sellers qualification, before moving into purchasing arable Inputs, including fertiliser & crop protection products, then into grain and crop storage before joining YAGRO. In his words: "I pride myself on my ability to communicate, engage and cultivate relationships with customers to best support, develop, and grow their businesses. I have always had a fascination with technology and believe that organised, validated, ‘real world’ data will be pivotal for enhancing decision making on farms as we move through the next phases of UK agriculture."
